Lackland is the basic military center for Air Force recruits, one of four training centers nationwide, as well as the site of the Defense Language Institute English Language Center and Iner-American Air forces Academy for International students. The Gateway Historical Collection is the repository for photos and documents pertaining to both Kelly and Lackland AFBs and early military aviation in San Antonio.

Hangar 9 and the Aeromedical Evacuation Annex
Hangar 9 is the oldest in the Air Force. Exhibits contain the history of the base, the development of manned flight and the evolution of aerospace medicine. Free admission.

History and Traditions Museum
Featuring aviation history, the museum contains a collection of rare airplanes, engines and weapons. Thirty aircraft are displayed. Components date from World War I to the present, and vary from engines to machine guns.
